A 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries after the e-bike he was riding, which was carrying a group of people, was involved in a crash with a car.

A white Mitsubishi Triton ute and a black e-bike collided at the intersection of Verbrugghen Street and Chinner Crescent in Melba around 9 pm on Monday (16 February), an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

They said three young people had been riding the e-bike and all were treated at the scene by paramedics.

One of these riders, the 12-year-old boy, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Police are aware the boy and two others were seen riding around Belconnen earlier that evening,” the police spokesperson said.

“Officers are seeking anyone who witnessed the riders or has dashcam footage from the area prior to the collision to come forward.”

Detective Inspector Mark Steel also issued a warning about the dangers and significant safety risks associated with e‑rideable devices, such as e‑scooters and e‑bikes.

“Just as when you’re driving a car or riding a motorcycle, the same road rules apply for e-rideable devices. Please be aware and stay alert,” he said.

“Without proper protective clothing, helmets, and safe riding behaviour, riders risk being involved in high‑speed collisions and suffering severe injuries or death.”
