1601

1601 is the name of a bare penthouse apartment perched high above the lake, as well as an ephemeral exhibition happening there this week.

In a concrete shell with sublime views hangs 50 works by prestigious local artists. Stacked on milk-crates and immersed in natural light, this industrial-style exhibition achieves three purposes:

    – to exhibit and sell quality local art
    – to raise money for Barnados
    – to encourage sustainable Christmas shopping: local art is a better gift than imported consumables.

This free exhibition showcases more than 16 artforms, including painting, sculpture, projections, photography, numerous textiles, zines and live drawing. Prices for minor items start at $20. The event is trying to encourage the wider community to explore the more and lesser known artists of our city in an exciting space.

    Launch: Saturday at 1pm
    Open daily: 1-4pm
    Finish: Friday (23/12) at 4pm
