ACT Policing will welcome 21 new officers into the ranks as recruits are sworn in as Constables of Police in front of friends and family at the AFP College in Barton today (Friday, July 27).
The group commenced the recruit course on January 30 2012 and underwent 26 weeks training at the college to prepare them for their new role.
The class comprises 20 men and one woman, ranging in age from 22 to 42. They bring a breadth of experience and skills to the frontline, coming from a range of previous professions, including fitness instructor, computer technician and former Australian rugby union representative.
Constable Annette Taylor was awarded the Commissioner’s Award for Excellence in Recruit Training for her demonstrated excellence in all elements of the program, including; teamwork, leadership, communication, academic achievement, physical training and commitment to the values of the AFP.
Acting Chief Police Officer for the ACT David McLean said that today’s attestation marks the beginning of a challenging new career for those graduating.
“These graduates will face new challenges on a daily basis while working within ACT Policing and their variety of life experiences will be beneficial as they adapt to their new role,” Acting Assistant Commissioner McLean said.
The new ACT Policing officers will undertake two weeks of duties within the Traffic Operations portfolio before being assigned to various police stations around Canberra to perform a community policing role. This is the second recruit course to graduate after the “You’d make a great cop” campaign conducted by ACT Policing in 2010.
