A man has died at a South Coast beach after he was pulled unresponsive from the surf.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the 54-year-old man, who is believed to be from Canberra, was at Gannet Beach at Bawley Point on Wednesday (16 April).

Emergency services were called shortly before 4 pm after two surfers found him unresponsive in the water.

They brought the man to shore and started CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

However, they were unable to revive the man.

Officers attached to the South Coast Police District will prepare a report on the man’s drowning for the information of the Coroner.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned people to keep an eye on hazardous surf conditions that are expected to pummel the NSW coast this Easter long weekend.

The conditions are being driven by a low-pressure system off the western coast of New Zealand and are expected to affect the coast over several days.
