I heard there was an irish pub opening up in Kaleen…not near the big supabarn, but on at the other shops.

Ant, my sister lives in Sandy, Utah! (Hates it, BTW) When she discovered the “bloomin’ onion” she rang me laughing so hard I could barely make out what she was saying.

I was poisoned by a “Bloomin Onion” from the Outback Steakhouse (Sandy, Utah) … ugh. All that oil, I had to resort to Imodium (provided by a yank housemate). There’s nothing on that menu that is Australian. But i’m talking about a fake aussie pub in Canberra! We don’t have any. Aussie pubs in country towns are awesome. I’m sure someone could mock one up. complete with gents loos just outside of the public bar, and the ladies needing a map to find it out near the chookhouse.

As for a Turkish pub, I dont’ think they have them. However, Turkish beer is quite drinkable, lightish lager style. They’re muslims but very user-friendly ones. ie they make beer.

the pub near the fire station is going to be bocce (sp?) club i believe. Have been there once not bad but nothing special.. beer from fresh taps is always nice!!

Who remembers the mid to late 1990’s institution in Belconnen called Las Vegas….That place rocked.

Interestingly, Ye Olde English Pubbe, The George Harcourt, recently stopped its live music on Sunday afternoons. Word on the grapevine was that the music pulled in the punters, but the particular punters it pulled didn’t spend much.

Had a gig there last year and thought the place was pretty busy (standing room only; people were ordering meals etc); went back when they had a big blues band and the place was jammed; seriously, you couldn’t get near the bar. Which might have been the problem – it was quite oppressively full, which meant people weren’t ordering food or drinks. Also, for me, a venue where you can’t actually hear yourself speak or have a conversation is not a venue I want to spend much time in. If the music’s the focal point I’ll go to a festival or concert; when I go to a pub, I like a bit of atmosphere, including live music, but I also want to be able to order a drink and talk to my friends.

I’m always amused when people book us for a function and then worry that we’ll be offended if people talk over us, stop us for speeches etc. Apart from the fact that if you’re paying, we’ll do whatever the hell you want, we’re there for atmosphere, not giving a concert (though we can do that too if you want!).

Turkish pub? Nifty idea (“the Canberra Casbah”) but there’s probably a dearth of authentic models to draw upon given Turkey’s a Muslim country… Perhaps Rick’s Cafe in Casablanca would do instead?

They bloodily well should! I can’t count how many times I’ve been passed out on the pavement semiconscious craving a beer.

Eh well you can drink beer in bars. I personally think bars are one of the best places you can host bands. Festivals may be better but in a different less personal way.

I would like them to play at my house but I think they may be a little selfish.

I have no problems with the Basement, I go there very regularly. But I would like them to have a little bit more diversity in the genre of music that is played there. That is maybe a reflection on the scene more than what they choose to host (I’m just not sure)
