An elderly man was taken to hospital in a critical condition after he was hit by a car in north Canberra yesterday (17 February).
An ACT Policing spokesperson said officers were called to a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Ellenborough Street in Lyneham, near the northern intersection with Cossington Smith Crescent, around 4:30 pm on Tuesday.
“The pedestrian, an 89-year-old man, was treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics before being taken to hospital in a critical condition,” they said.
“The driver of the vehicle involved, a 94-year-old woman, is assisting police with their enquiries.”
Police cordoned off part of the street on Tuesday afternoon and were directing motorists around the area.
Acting Inspector Frazer Howard said the circumstances of the collision were being investigated and there was a lot of evidence to gather.
He said the pedestrian suffered critical injuries, with injuries to his head and lower limbs, while the car involved in the collision was significantly damaged.
“Police have spoken to a number of witnesses who were here at the scene,” he said.
“ACT Policing would like to remind all road users to be mindful of their surroundings, monitor other traffic and road users and to drive to the prevailing weather and road conditions.”
Police are also seeking witnesses and dash-cam footage of the incident.
