I remember the Treasury christmas party back in 1987 was held there. PaulK came and had a quick pint and thanked us all for the hard work during the year…god I am old now and still a pube.
It’s actually called the Mecure Canberra now, has been for a while, ever since Mecure purchased it.
As a regular drinker there, I have noticed that they churn through staff at a phenomenal rate. Not a bad place to have a quiet drink, and the food in the bistro is pretty good.
The pic is well before my time. However in the 60s they had a night club at the rear and that is where I first tasted oysters and saw the Bee Gees, the skinny little kids that they were. Fabulous. Earlier than that though my parents used to drink there and my sister and I used to play in the two pine trees in the front. They were in much much better condition that the one now left.

The Hotel Ainslie / Ainslie Rex /Olims where I spent many a Friday evening after work in the Saloon bar. The Public Bar was a place to go if you wanted to get into an argument especially if you wore a suit and tie like we servants of the public did in those days.
