Barton Highway treehugger

ACT Policing’s Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team are investigating a single vehicle collision at the ACT border of the Barton Highway this afternoon (Sunday, July 28).

Around 4:30pm police attended the scene on the Barton Highway near Victoria Street, Hall Murrumbateman-bound where a silver Toyota Land Cruiser has collided with a tree.

Police responded to the incident and reduced traffic to just one lane.

The 68-year-old male driver of the car was transported to The Canberra Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Registration plate started with NED (couldn’t see if ACT or NSW). Probably quite appropriately. Funnily enough, his rear lights weren’t working, only the number plate lights, so he must want to be noticed.

Hm, I would hope road safety also enters into that decision not to speed too, not just the fear of sanction.

A little off topic, but I drove Clyde Mountain yesterday for the first time in ages, both directions.

It was very quiet on the way back, just after dusk, and what little traffic there was westbound flowed well at the speed limits (I never speed on the King’s Hwy – too much police presence, and had just seen someone pulled over by Highway Patrol approaching Moruya, and had seen a mobile speed camera in Batemans Bay earlier in the day).

Didn’t stop the idiotic behaviour. A 4wd white raised Hilux or similar (probably 1990s or 2000s model) overtook me and another car at the same time, which I don’t object to, except that it took him way into a double white line zone. A dip in the road meant he didn’t see an oncoming vehicle, which didn’t come too close, but close enough to probably give everyone involved a little adrenaline rush. Now that dip in the road might just be the reason for the double white lines, dontcha think?

And don’t get me started on fog lights, and heavily laden vehicles whose “dip” has no effect. Or trailers without any lights at all.
