The tap water is coming out brown this Monday in O’Connor.
I’m wondering if anyone else is seeing the same?

Have had yellow water for about one and a half weeks. Today worse than ever. I’m in Narrabundah.
The whole “running the back tap etc etc” thing actually worked. I had clean water by 7.00pm.
I take back my scepticism.
Thanks Danman. That actually does explain something a few years ago. I had my suspicions at the time.
The current rings look quite different, and are also appearing to a lesser extent in the basin.
Been there done that with the takeaway dinners and filling the kettle from alternative supplies. I hope things are better soon for those of you in the inner north.
The water in Watson looked like flat beer this morning. Worse tonight. I called ACTEWAGL and spoke to a nice woman who sounded strangely surprised when I told her. She then went into an explaination about “unexpected water delivery, increased sediment etc etc”.
Her advice was to “run your back tap for 20 minutes then don’t use water at all for half an hour”. Sounded very much like “take two aspirin and call me in the morning”. I asked her for reassurance that I wouldn’t be in trouble for using my hose outside the set water restriction hours and she said no and took down my address.
I have enjoyed watering my plants for 20 minutes out of approved times *giggle wickedly* but wondered why ACTEWAGL couldn’t give us the heads up if a number of suburbs were going to be without water for cooking, drinking and washing for (what will probably be) 24 hours.
Off now to buy bottled water and a takeaway. Thank god wine doesn’t need water.
Same yellow/brown water in Lyneham last night (and still discoloured this morning).
I was washing the dishes last night and for the life of me couldn’t understand why my gravy pot looked clean, but when I rinsed it out it had brown water in it!
Actew said that things should be cleared up this morning, and if we still have discoloured water to let them know ASAP.
If they can’t keep the normal water “pure” now just think of the health risks when you are forced to start drinking recycled water. Maybe the water supply purification process should be given its appropriate new name http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ass_to_mouth
Unexplained black ring in the toilet could be as a result of excessive blood sugar being excreted in the urine.
The bacteria in the toilet feeds on the sugar in the urine and creates deposits.
We had an unexplained ring that was persistant and recurring.
Got treated for diabetes and voila – no longer a problem.
Not saying that’s how it it, just that’s how it was for me 🙂

Yikes, we’ve never had it that bad. Hopefully all will be back to normal when I finally get home.

Not in my experience 🙁
There was the time they told us to run the hose to clear the dirt and the following day, presumably after more complaints, they said oops, we’ve now been told there was a broken valve which required the supply to be diverted in directions long unused thereby stirring up sediment. The sight of hydrants open all around the area made our little attempt the previous evening to clear the dirt through our garden hose seem rather laughable. Then there was the time the water went off in the middle of the morning rush, apparently we should have gotten a letter advising of maintenance work, oops no, on second thoughts it wasn’t our area that should have had the water switched off. I do feel a little sorry for the people who answer the phones, they don’t seem to be told anything.
Meanwhile, our water hasn’t been brown lately http://region.com.au/?p=10320#comments but we can have three or four different smells in a day, there’s a black ring in the loo like we’ve never had before which sometimes reappears within hours of cleaning and other times doesn’t reappear for days, a few towels have gone inexplicably mouldy even though at first I wasn’t doing anything different to what I’ve always done and lately I’ve actually been really careful to change towels frequently and not leave them bunched up when damp, and the metallic taste has been more frequent again.
@Danman: No, you’re cool. Only one who gets the thumbs-down is me for not mentioning it. You were right to call me on it.
Confirming @djk, ActewAGL just got back to me. Cleaning stirred things up. Will clear over the next few hours.
@Danman: Called ActewAGL first. Answer was “we’re looking into it”. Question here was also somewhat a heads-up.
Be nice if you mentioned that in the original post.
Save people like me looking a fool even moreso
From our building manager:
ACTEW have just advised that the water supply along Marcus Clarke St has been stirred up after some blockages were cleared this morning causing a dirty supply. We will advise further when this is expected to improve.

Saw ActewAGL trucks on Fairfax St (Belconnen Way-Macarthur Ave) at 3:30pm and a lot of water being released into the storm drain. Possibly trying to sluice?
Water not perfect at 4:30pm but a lot clearer, 1km downpipe from Fairfax St.

This morning was okay for us, but this is not uncommon.
How brown? Just a bit dirty, or just plain yuk?
When we get brown water from our taps it’s just a bit discoloured, and a bit smelly. But enough that I tip it straight on to the garden, rather than drink it. :p
I drank it and it gave me super powers. I can now rust any piece of metal using only the power of my mind.
But your water is only brown because I did a poo in your pipes, jakez.

It tends to happen when a higher-than-usual flow dislodges sediments from the insides of the pipes. An example is if a hydrant was used in the area.

It was like that in Fyshwick about 2 or 3 weeks ago.
…I don’t want to go home to brown water.
Maybe they are working on the mains, things like that do happen 🙂
