ACT Policing in co-operation with NSW Police will conduct high-visibility patrols on major arterial roads in and out of Canberra over the Labour Day and ACT Family and Community Day long weekend holiday periods.
Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson said with large numbers of motorists travelling in and out of Canberra over the holiday periods, drivers are reminded to obey speed limits, take regular breaks and be patient and alert when driving in heavy traffic conditions.
“All motorists driving, either in the ACT or interstate, need to heed the warnings put in place to ensure that they have a safe journey on the roads,” Acting Superintendent Anderson said.
“ACT Policing is asking the Canberra community to enjoy the holiday period, but remember to keep our roads safe by not drinking and driving and staying within the speed limit at all times. Make sure you fasten your seatbelt and remember it is your responsibility to ensure that all occupants of your vehicle are wearing their seatbelts too.”
“To those in the Community travelling interstate, ensure you are well rested before embarking on a long journey and never drive when you are tired and fatigued. Also, it is advisable to take regular rest breaks every two hours when travelling extended distances.”
“ACT Policing asks for motorists to stick to the speed limits at all times and to drive to the conditions of the roads. Speed limits are the maximum speed you must travel on a road in any conditions.”
Double demerits will apply for speeding and seatbelt offences, with an extra point for all other traffic offences over the Labour Day long weekend beginning at midnight on (Friday, October 4) through to midnight (Monday, October 7) inclusive.
The ACT road toll for 2013 currently sits at six.
