Yeah it seems alright. It just means I have to use my phone for navigation, or keep checking it for traffic conditions. It’s easier when the vehicle prompts me en route and gives an option to circumnavigate (as it’s always on, and not chewing my mobile data). I’ve driven in countries where the traffic button isn’t a dead key, and it’s a godsend of a system. I’m surprised Sydney hasn’t adopted it over the shitty suna system.

Whatever you do, don’t payany attention to the half hourly traffic reports on ABC News Radio in the morning from the Australian Traffic Network or whatever the hell those fools are called. Their crapness is beyond crap. The ABC is being scammed a huge amount of money for that service, even if they’re only paying $1.49 per month for it.

I can remember multiple occasions where I’ve been sitting motionless on the GDE or Parkes way in the morning, a million miles from anywhere in a huge line of motionless traffic, and those F*cking idiots have come and smoothly intoned, as they almost always do…”…aaannnndd….everything’s alright in Canberra…no problems there…now moving on to Melbourne…”. Half an hour later I’ll eventually chug past the giant crash and zoom off to work on the other side, and they’ll say the same thing…no problems in Canberra.

And the announcers always pompously say things like “I’ve just got something coming up here…”, as though they’ve got 437 live traffic feeds from major roads all over the country that they’re monitoring simultaneously like someone in a computer hacker movie. Maybe they do, but if so, they’re not doing a real good job of it.

And if they ever do report anything from Canberra, it’ll be a bingle in a side street off a side street in Kaleen that resulted in Kev and Barry being delayed for 30 seconds while they drive around the glass from the broken tail light two hours ago.

There’s a twitter account called gettrafficcanberra which does okay, and also sends a tweet when a problem clears up, although sometimes if an accident clears out of hours they’ll often tweet an “all clear” the next morning.

Meanwhile, time saver traffic on 104.7 continues to educate. I never knew Edinburgh Avenue was pronounced “Edinburg”

+1 to that. Set the notification on this on your smartphone, and easy way to check before commuting.

Act_pol twitter notifications can be a bit slow 45-60 mins and one recent multiple rear-ender on the GDE never made it on there at all

If you live in the Gungahlin area, I’d also follow @mygungahlin on Twiiter.. Sometimes they beat the AFP account to reporting accidents in the area.
