ANU Film Group – tonight it’s angst and grief, with I’VE LOVED YOU SO LONG at 8pm followed by the award-winning UNFINISHED SKY with William McInnes at around 10pm. Saturday early evening it’s time to go Disney with The Rock in RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN at 6pm. Saturday evening it’s the classic STARSHIP TROOPERS (you know you want to see that shower scene again!) at 8pm. Domestic Animal Services Open Day

• Are you an animal lover?
• Find your new best friend!

Domestic Animal Services (DAS) will open its doors to the public this coming Saturday. ACT Rangers will be there to give you advice and information about DAS and the services the shelter provides. ACT Rangers will also be giving guided tours through the facility.

Free entertainment for families will be provided in the form of dog obedience displays, face painting, jumping castle and demonstrations from the ACT Corrective Services dogs.

The DAS Animal Recovery ARK trailers and Disease Control Centre, which assisted in the recent Victorian Bushfire disaster, will also be on exhibition.

Domestic Animal Services are also seeking volunteers to assist with exercising the dogs. Volunteer induction and information sessions will be run throughout the day.

RIDE OF SILENCE,
Sunday, 23 June

The Ride of Silence is held yearly in cities across the world.

Join other Canberra cyclists in a silent ride two abreast at a slow pace to promote safer roads for all road users.

The 2009 Canberra Ride of Silence aims to:

– remember those killed or injured whilst cycling on roads.
– raise awareness of the need for all road users to respect one another and to use roads in a considerate manner.
– promote the importance for cyclists and motorists to obey the road rules.
– remind the community that cyclists are ordinary people who have a right to safety on our roads.

Where: Start and finish at Regatta Place, north of Commonwealth Avenue bridge.

When: Sunday, 23 June. Arrive at 9am for a 9.30 start.

The ride: Approx. 6 km in length at a slow pace (max 20 km/h) in a loop that includes part of the Parliamentary Triangle.

The Ride of Silence will take place on open roads and participants will be expected to ride safely and considerately and obey all traffic laws. Those that take part in the Ride of Silence must be aware that they do so at their own risk. All welcome; all you need is a bike and a helmet. Riders are encouraged to wear armbands: black for everyone, or red for those who have been injured by motorists.

Also, if you’re into 8-ball, the first round of the ACT Open Singles championships is being played across various pubs and clubs over the weekend, including The Basement, The Maram (Ernidale – ex Venue), Ojo’s cafe in Tuggers, The Labor Club in Belconnen, the Tuggeranong Southern Cross Club, and the Fyshwick Tavern.

Competition isn’t open (registrations closed in April), however spectators are most welcome. Most venues will have competition running from about 10am on Saturday and Sunday.
