Yes, you’re right- but I guess it’s about the size and scale of things. But, you are right – our local store has a really large booze section – actually about 1/3 of the shop!

Does it? I hadn’t noticed – probably because I wasn’t objecting to liquor stores being next to supermarkets but to liquor stores being so close to the school. I was simply saying the Ainslie IGA was a great supermarket with a great range of products from small businesses. Not sure of your point….

I don’t think it’s very likely that a liquor store is going to sell anything to primary school aged children. Not many 12 year olds getting around that could pass as old enough not to require ID. Most supermarkets (IGA/Supabarn/etc) sell liquor anyway and it would be easier to steal as it is in a shop that the children might have a legitimate reason to enter. A liquor store attendee is instantly going to be suspicious of primary school kids in the store without an adult.

No issue with apartments at all, but if they could get an IGA as good as the Ainslie one that would be a great coup because you’re right, they are a great little IGA.

Primary school kids obtaining alcohol was not my concern! :). It ‘some’ was the adults that go there and the social problems that can and do occur around a liquor store. My problem is not with liquor stores in general but the extremely close vicinity of it to the school.

Well, I do have an issue with apartments having a view of the kids in the playground – for, I hope, obvious reasons.

Any news anyone on the court case?

I hear that it was back on in June, but interested if anyone knows how it is going?

This is the third week of no construction works at the Giralang shops. One can only hope that the court proceedings are near so that we can finally get a YES or NO to whatever they are building; but hopefully the shop’s that we have waited 10 years for.
At it’s current stage of construction works, I still think there is the possibility for an amendment to the DA that we may end up seeing apartments/ units built instead. That would be a bummer.
And on another note, why is it that ‘Bunnings’ are able to build right across the road to ‘Home Hardware’ in Gungarlin Is it really needed. Appears that Home Hardware will be facing some competition, much the same way that Superbarn and IGA have made a huge song and dance over.

If there is an injunction, perhaps details can be found by looking at the Court proceedings?

Nikias are not troubled by a lack of income, aaa123, I think they’ll cope. They are only one of the biggest developers in Canberra.

Last news I heard was summarised by Mick Gentlemen here on RiotACT in November last year in reply to aaa123:
“The developer is proceeding at his own risk with approved building works pending the decision relating to this development currently before the High Court as part of its appeal process.”

…and until this post it seemed that was exactly what was happening.

Frankly if I owned Kaleen Supabarn and had millions of dollars invested in my business then I’d probably still be putting up a fight too. They are legally entitled to protect their own interests, and the court has upheld their arguments on several occasions. It’s not a cheap exercise to mount multiple legal challenges all the way to the High Court, so there’s clearly a lot at stake.
