Anyone know what they are building on the roof level of the multi-storey Canberra Centre car park? Noticed the car park was closed last Friday – crane and concrete pump now on site.

Why go with half measures, give up the pretence of having an urban heart and turn of all of Civic into one undivided delightful multilevel concrete carpark.
It’ll be so convenient, for people coming to Civic to …park their cars.
The megamall continues to eat the city.
Do you remember the city before the megamall? It was nothing special. Of course, having a megamall isn’t the ideal either.
Yes, it felt more like a country town (without the typical lazy river flowing through the middle of it), but at least there were more people around in the outdoors areas.

You’re right. But the way it’s tracking, towards a megamall takeover of the CBD is not the best possible outcome. Although maybe that’s all that is possible with a government that rolls over to the developers every time.

That would explain it! As a rooftop parker I really wouldn’t have thought another level was required…
From the Canberra Centre website:
Canberra Centre Car Park Update
We are making further enhancements to the parking facilities at Canberra Centre by adding an additional level of parking spaces to our Big W car park.
To enable the enhancement works to occur as quickly and safely as possible, the rooftop (level 5) of the Big W car park will be temporarily closed from Friday 4 September.
All day parking will be relocated to Level 4 of the Big W car park.
The additional level of parking will provide for 350 new car spaces, increasing the total number of spaces at the Centre to approximately 5,600.
There is still ample parking at the Centre, with approximately 5,100 spaces available.
