Ask RiotACT: Help with MacBook

Apple and its Resellers are great for repairs under warranty but horrendously expensive for repairs outside warranty.

As a support person I should not be surprised at this question, …but a few specifics really help.

What model and how old is your MacBook? If it is under 2 years it is still under warranty. If you bought AppleCare that would be 3 years.

What does “not in a good way” actually mean? What exactly is wrong?

What makes you think it is hardware and not something else, whatever it is?

What are you willing to spend, given that repairs can be expensive and may even be more than what your MacBook is worth?

Most of the repairers have been pushed out of the market by the Apple Stores but there are some iPhone repairers with additional computer skills. Apple has been making life more difficult for repairers with cases so skinny that a lot of parts are glued in placeor soldered on the motherboards making the unit more reliable but much more expensive to fix when things do go wrong.
