Hi Rioters.
I was at the Curtin shops yesterday and noticed a few signs around with the wording ‘No swamp for Curtin’. I also noticed a few of these signs up on the Cotter Road.
Does anyone know what this is about?

There is a plan to introduce wetlands across certain parts of Canberra as part of the ACT Healthy Waterways project. One of these areas is near Reynolds Street in Curtin. Local residents have concerns around safety etc. This article gives some further background.
My goodness. Photo in that article, a better poster image for Nimbyism there has never been.
You need only look around to see hundreds of places mozzies breed in a typical street. Snakes, well they’re travelling critters and good for getting rid of mice and rats. And there’s many examples of these water treatments measures that work great.
Hasn’t the concrete stormwater channel that replaced Yarralumla Creek got heritage listing by now?

Why the hell is this in the Melbourne Age?
It’s in “Fairfax media”, which means you can access the article with the branding of any of their outlets. Just change “theage.com.au” to “canberratimes.com.au”

You are talking about the online “service”.
I pay over $500 a year to get the Canberra Times direct in printed form but Fairfax Media doesn’t include Weekend Magazine which is included with The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald.
They treat their Canberra Readers as second-class readers.

Lucky people. I would love this to be done near where I live. These wetlands are beautiful and they bring wildlife such as birds. As for snakes, I’ve had one in my garden without needing a pond. Perhaps a pond would have distracted it away from my garden. If they get mosquitoes I think they should check for pooling water in their own yard first, before blaming any pond some distance away. It only takes a small bit of water to breed mosquitoes, such as water around a pot plant.

It would appear that Melbourne media does local Canberra news better than our own rag
