Daylight Saving ends Sunday

Just a short note to remind everybody that Daylight Saving finally ends on Sunday morning (Saturday night) at 2AM. Wind the clock back one hour, which in these days of digital readouts means pressing the hour button 23 times. We’ll no longer have to put up with going to work whilst it is still dark. I don’t know about anybody else but I really do think they’ve overdone it with this extended Daylight Saving. It should go back to starting the last Sunday in October and finishing the first Sunday in March. Whilst we are returning to realtime, the US and most of Europe are moving into their periods of Summer time. We’ll let them put up with the faded curtains for the next six months.

Yup, definitely overdone. It was so good to wake up this morning and see the sun; I was first into the office this morning!

Don’t get me wrong. I love the extended daylight in the evenings, but not at the cost of a nice, sunny Canberra autumn morning at a reasonable time. The notion is to take advantage of the longer daylight hours, not to simply shift daylight to the end of the day.

Daylight Saving is a pain in Brisbane. Just because they don’t have it doesn’t stop it infiltrating your life. And since it infiltrates, it’d make the place a lot more tolerable if they observed it.
TV programs (especially sporting events) are often affected – some have Sydney time, some Brisbane, and some vary. Ditto for national radio networks (esp ABC/TripleJ etc). Pay TV’s bad for it – with some channels observing DST when it’s in and some not. And if you work in a Brisbane office which has significant dealings with the south, or (as I did) which is headquartered in the south, you find that some of your daily routine is run to Sydney time.
All up, it’s a pain because you’re living in one timezone, but have to consider aspects of the other. At least here in Canberra, we’re in the same timezone for just about all aspects of our lives.
Jokes aside, I did find one Queenslander with a legitimate reason for disliking DST – the guy who ran the drive-in movie (they still have one in Brisbane). He can’t show his movies until it’s dark, so the time matters to him. Everyone else up there, whenever they express their anti-DST reasons, show themselves to be sadly ill-informed (or just daft).

I’m moving to Brisbane shortly…and I know that daylight savings is the ONE thing I will miss about ‘Can’t-Bare-Rah’ hahaha…

Daylight Saving promotes terrorism because the extra hour gives terrorists more time to plan and carry out their attacks. Pedophiles love Daylight Saving because kids are out longer and there is more time and greater opportunities for children to be abducted and molested.

Hahaha. Not to mention the curtains stop laying and the chooks start fading…..

I love daylight savings. Okay so the mornings are a bit dark when I go to work – big deal. I know I’ll enjoy going home in daylight and still having a couple hours light in the evening when I can actually take some leisure time to enjoy it.

Swatch did not “invent” universal time. It’s already here, and you get a choice of GMT or UTC. Even better, you can use an existing clock set to UTC to follow that time standard – no need to buy a new watch from Swatch.

As for switching clocks back/forth – all of my clocks are on computers of some kind, they take care of themselves.

Speaking of computers, my calendar is Daylight Savings Time aware – I booked an appointment for 20:00 GMT (hey look – there’s that coordinated time thing again), and on Thursday it was reporting 6am Sunday. Then Sunday morning, the appointment was still at 6am!
