The Canberra Times brings word of a breakdown in negotiations between the ACT’s public sector employees and the Stanhope Government.
A 4.75% raise over two years is apparently not enough and they’re off to Fair Work Australia.

Katy has the idea that everyone should pay for her lack of ability to manage a budget of a small Territory. The ACT Government is already a revolving door for the Commonwealth Government with pay and conditions far less than what can be offered there. I believe there is actually a requirement for the employer to actually “negotiate” in collective agreement negotiations, which the government are not doing. I wouldn’t be surpised if Fairwork planted a boot up her butt.

4.75% over two years is appalingly low. I can’t understand why people who can go to the APS stay in ACT Government. The pay rates are already uncompetitive and this will see them sink further behind. For the recored I don’t work in either jurisdiction.
You have hit the nail on the head here. And this is what might cause the Stanhope Government some problems. When key staff leave, and they can not hire staff going forwards due to the poor conditions, pay, etc. what will they do?
Screw more things up than now.
The whole negotiation process might go a lot easier for all concerned if they could simply hooked in on the same deal the ACT pollies got themselves – CPI + whatever the independent tribunal considers fair and reasonable.

I would have preferred the 4.75%…
Hopefully you’ll still have a job going forward…

Really? But they are not entitled to improve their pay scale in their current role, particularly if they are actually in a job they enjoy? I’m curious…
There is merit in the theory of paying peanuts. Perhaps if better conditions were on offer, there might be a better class of Monkey in the ACT Public Service?
This is going to open a can of works now isn’t it……..
Local Government workers revolting
Is it the smell, or the way they talk? Some of them seem quite nice, not revolting at all.

4.75% doesn’t seem unreasonable to me (and no, I’m not a pube and never have been).
