And the winner gets showered in floriade flowers after which we all retire to the stripped down multicultural festival wondering where all the VB and snags are.
Perhaps they could make the extra lanes from crushed up schools. Oh, and close it on Fridays and have drag racing on…
It’s all part of the ‘build half now to get us by and half later when we have some more cash’ strategy of public works.
If they are going to build the entire thing only one lane wide then that’s just nuts. Also, why don’t they make the lanes a bit narrower on some of our other arterial roads and and give us three lanes instead of two. Even Canberra drivers don’t need a paddock as wide as those lanes to drive on!
Indi: not sure, but there’s already pylons there for a second carriageway.
I hate driving under that half bridge, always worried it’s gonna fall on me.
johnboy: didn’t someone say when the beams went over Ginninderra Dr that those are the longest you can buy in Australia? I think they have a significantly bigger gap to bridge at Belconnen Way.
Don’t forget, they are placing the foundation for the other double lane at the same time, for later development.
Lets be realistic, this road is a necessary evil, and will benefit more than just Gungahlin residents. Anyone living in the Woden/Weston Creek/Tuggeranong area who commutes to Belconnen or Mitchell will find a much better road to travel on. Anyone from that area travelling north via the Barton or Federal Highways will find it a major improvement.
Anyone going through Glenloch Interchange, who is currently held up by the terrible design and traffic lights will notice the improvement.
But $100+ million for a single lane each way road – it isn’t the best value for money as far as I’m concerned…
Yes JB, but wouldn’t it be better to build roads when the budget is in a better state than it is at the moment?
Anyway, the ACT Govt can’t maintain the roads it has already, without adding to the problem.
Well, personally i think building roads is something the Government should be doing.
But with Ginninderra Drive and Parkes Way available for detours you have to wonder if it would have been cheaper to close the road for a weekend and drop pre-fabricated beams over.
It’s quite spectacular round the back of the AIS as well, along the bike path.
