Police across Australia and New Zealand have wrapped up Operation Unite which commenced on Friday (December 17). This Operation Unite is the third conducted across Australia and New Zealand targeting trouble makers and antisocial behaviour resulting from alcohol misuse.
ACT Policing took into custody 26 people in the weekend’s crackdown of alcohol-related violence, anti-social behaviour and other alcohol-related incidents which reinforces the message that alcohol misuse will not be tolerated.
Deputy Chief Police Officer Bruce Hill said that Operation Unite was not about stopping people having a good time, but about sending a message that everyone has to think about their behaviour and consider the impact it may have long after the night is over.
“This battle is not only for police. Irresponsible drinking is a community-wide problem and demands a community-wide response that emphasises the need for people to take greater responsibility for their behaviour and the impact that has on other people. It helps remind everyone that there is no fun in ending the night in a police cell or a hospital bed,” Commander Hill said.
Over the operation, police conducted 2621 random breath tests across the ACT, resulting in 31 positive tests. The highest reading was that from a 50-year-old male Queensland licence-holder. He was stopped at 4.45am today (Sunday, December 19) while driving in Monash. Upon being conveyed to Tuggeranong Police Station, he later returned a Level 4 Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.231, and was lodged in the ACT Watch House.
