Not really keen on hanging around the throngs of folks clamouring to see the fireworks.
Does anyone have any recommendations on alternate sites to view the fireworks tonight?

I ended up parking near Boatshead restaurant and sat on the Median Strip off Constitution Avenue before Rydges Hotel. Views were amazing as the fireworks seemed to be coming towards us. Not too crowded either. Thanks for all the suggestions though.
Oh, I don’t know… I had forgotten how much of a hard slog up the hill it is. And you’re doing it in the dark. I got there about half an hour before midnight, and by myself. However there was a nice cool breeze, and I actually stripped down to my bare chest and let my clothes flutter in the wind. Once they were dry I put them back on- and not before time, because others arrived abput ten minutes later.
The fireworks certainly looked spectacular, but there were also a long way away.
Thanks To Mad Kiwi, Vernon Place was a great suggestion. But thanks also to Holditz, a picnic on Mt Taylor also seems like a great option for future New Years.
The midnight fireworks (the real fireworks) began right on cue at midnight, and they were spectacular and the one to watch.
Who cares when the 9pm fireworks started.
Too late now obviously but I was thinking Mt Majura might be good place but quite a walk/bike ride to the summit.
We watched the 9 p.m. fireworks from the lawns of the Canberra Yacht Club last night – great location with fantastic reflections in the water of the lake. Got to see the AFP’s jet skis come out onto the lake at the start of their shift as well!
One question – why did the 9 p.m. fireworks not begin until 9:06? Did the midnight fireworks also start 6 minutes after the hour?
For the 9pm show… park at Civic Pool earlyish, walk over to Commonwealth Park with thermos and dessert, have a wander around, drop stuff back at the car, watch fireworks from the corner of London Cct and Constitution Ave (byo chairs or blanket), walk back to car and drive home.
No parties to go to, so I am heading to the top of Mount Taylor to see the new year in. In previous years you could see fireworks going off all over the place, but with the fireworks bans I figure it’ll be much quieter. A few people have the same idea so it’s a little cosy.
I havent been to a Canberra fireworks show yet. Were heading out to check it out. If I had to guess the fireworks will be at the lake Berley and behind the theater in civic?
Dairy Farmers Hill in Stromlo Forest was the best lookout for fireworks until Stanhope built an arboretum…
Park behind the Treasury Block (between Old Parliament House and Questacon) and walk to Reconciliation Place. Crowds are normally light on – especially on the little mound before the ramp – and it isn’t too hard to get out after (even after the Skyfire events)…
Best views are normally from right on the shores of the lake (in front of Reconciliation Place/National Library) or at Regatta Point. NYE fireworks should be a much easier experience than Skyfire… though not as dramatic either… don’t be afraid of the throngs…
Too many drunken bogans. Give up and do something nice with friends, sans fireworks.
Vernon circle is a good place for NYE, not far from city square, for OZ day and skyfire i watch from Mt Pleasant
You could try down near the Boatshed restaurant?
What would the view be like from the road around Parliament House, or even the Dam??
I went to Mt Anslie one year for the 9pm show. Not a bad view and very busy.
