Given the prevalence of sexual assaults, assaults and other criminal behaviour on university campuses (reported on just this week), and the whole area of white collar law, educated people are no more immune to criminal acts nor less capable of carrying them out should they choose to.

Yes, I’m sure they were all sitting around being perfectly good, probably had their iPod playing some old time music and dancing the charleston.
Let’s be realistic, broken alcohol bottles, syringes and used condoms don’t end up on public tennis courts, skateparks and in parks on a Saturday/Sunday morning by themselves. Have you been to Pine Island after a Friday or Saturday night? Better yet, check out you tube and see what Canberra lads and lasses get up to at skateparks, parks and tennis courts in the wee hours.

Permit me to be a bit coarse but if the most interesting thing they can think of to do with their bf/gf at 3am is hang at a skate park, likely drinking cheap goon, then they’re probably not great breeding stock anyway.
And yes, hanging in a deserted area in the wee hours is asking for trouble. That’s nothing new either, dates back centuries. Why do you think we invented kerosene street lights and night walkers in the 18th century. Indeed the foundation of the modern day Metropolitan Police was a community watchman who would patrol a small area as people went home. There are thuggish elements whose effects can be avoided with some common sense.

Like the Glebe Park episode, we should never concede that it is the victim’s fault (in that case a group of 4 were attacked by a larger group).

No way should we make people feel frightened to be outside, by conceding that thugs own any space outside our homes. Reclaim the night!
