Thirty-six people have been caught by ACT Policing for drink driving in the past week (March 7 to March 15) with nearly half of them on 0.00 licences. Twelve of the people apprehended have at least one previous drink driving conviction.
Eighteen people were caught over the long weekend alone, with one driver having five previous convictions and another one pending.
The 37-year-old man was caught about 1.00am on Saturday (March 12) on the Barton Highway. He recorded a reading of 0.194 on a 0.05 licence.
The highest reading for the week was 0.241, by a 45-year-old man on a 0.00 licence. He was apprehended about 12.15am on Tuesday, March 15 driving along Adelaide Avenue near Deakin.
Police were called to Kippax shops around 2.40pm last Wednesday (March 9) where a 60-year-old man on a 0.05 licence recorded the second highest reading for the week with 0.239.
Superintendent Mark Colbran said that while the number is higher this week than the average week, 30 percent of them are recidivist offenders.
“Each week we see people repeating the same behaviour. Once again, one third of all the drink drivers apprehended have been caught at least once before. Police cannot solve the drink driving issue alone. It is a community issue that affects the safety of all road users and it is up to the community to say that this is no longer acceptable. If you know someone who repeatedly drinks and drives pass that information on to police and we will take action” he said.
