A teenager who bit a police officer on the arm yesterday will face court this morning (Friday, April 1) charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, drink-driving, drive while disqualified and breach of bail.
The 17-year-old male, who lives in Macgregor, was stopped by ACT Policing officers about 5:50pm on Ginninderra Drive in Dunlop.
Upon being stopped the teenage driver allegedly switched seats with the front seat passenger. When questioned by police, he allegedly admitted he did this because his licence was disqualified.
Police noticed the alleged offender smelt strongly of alcohol and appeared moderately intoxicated.
The alleged offender was placed under arrest for drive whilst disqualified, at which point he allegedly became aggressive towards police and started to walk back to his vehicle.
Officers attempted to restrain the alleged offender, at which point he struggled violently and bit an officer on the arm.
The alleged offender was handcuffed and conveyed to Belconnen Police Station, where breath analysis indicated he had an alleged Blood-Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.095.
He will be charged as a repeat offender.
This is the third time the teenager has been taken into custody for alleged drink-driving. He is yet to face court on the second drink driving charge, which relates to an incident earlier this month.
North District Superintendent Mick Calatzis said assaults against police were not condoned by the community.
“Albeit the matter is before the court, police have an unforgiving task and we are sure the Canberra community does not support its police officers being assaulted,” Superintendent Calatzis said.
