ACT fatality free over easter

ACT has recorded a fatality-free Easter holiday period for the first time in three years as part of Operation Crossroads.

During the course of the operation, ACT Policing issued 119 traffic infringement notices (TINs) and 51 traffic infringement cautions. Across Australia more than 711,000 random breath tests were conducted, and 43,000 TINs issued to motorists.

The ACT and Northern Territory were the only two jurisdictions which did not record a road fatality over the holiday period.

Traffic Operations Superintendent Mark Colbran said that police are pleased that no road fatalities occurred in the ACT over the Easter period, but there is a continued concern in relation to the number of drink drivers apprehended.

Police apprehended 30 drink drivers during the operation, with eight exceeding their 0.00 blood alcohol content limit.

“ACT Policing was clear about its objectives about traffic enforcement for the Easter period, and it is disappointing that a small portion of the community fail to heed our advice when it comes to drink driving.

“The end of this traffic campaign does not mean that motorists should become complacent about road safety. In the upcoming week we will be preparing for back-to-school and for the month of May, targeting driver distraction on our roads,” Superintendent Colbran said.

A fatality free Easter on our roads?

Pure Luck.

As every motorist knows, we are surrounded by inebriated, drugged, foolhardy, speeding, crawling, distracted, vision challenged, seat-belt hating, tired and incompetent drivers.

A strong Police presence has a vastly better chance of detecting these motorists than relying on the revenue raising speed cameras.

Ah Poop. Police cost money.

And you don’t make money preventing road deaths, do you Sonic?

If you believe that applying the law to speeding motorists is not legitimate law enforcement, I guess we do.

I’d rather actual police officers on the road enforcing all the laws, not just the ones that are the easiest to make money from – especially since the data suggests that speed cameras neither save lives, nor make roads safer.

Which part of the “legitimate law enforcement” do you think I was attacking? It’s great that nobody died on our roads this Easter. Does that mean our government is doing a brilliant job in regards to road safety? I don’t think it does. My comment was a jab at our current government’s approach to road safety, not the news (if you can really call it that) itself.

It’s disappointing that you’re unable to understand the difference. It’s not surprising though.
