ACT Policing has located two men who went missing after bushwalking at Mount Coree in the Namadgi National Park last night (Sunday, May 15).
The call for help came around 5.30pm via mobile phone from one of the two missing men after if became apparent that he and his friend had become lost in the vicinity of Mt Coree.
Members from the Specialist Response and Security Tactical Response Team (SRSTR) began searching the area however due to the extremely cold weather and the fact that the men were not equipped with essential bushwalking supplies, the assistance of the Snowy Hydro Southcare helicopter was requested by police to help locate them.
Shortly after 9pm SRSTR members located a vehicle belonging to one of the missing men. The searched continued along Pabral Road until both men were located safe and well in thick bushland.
South District Superintendent Lesa Gale said an incident such as this highlights the need to prepare accordingly before going bushwalking.
“People should be well prepared before heading out. Food, water as well a torch, map and GPS are essential items to take with you on your walk. Bushwalkers should also seek information on the area they are planning on walking as well as checking the weather forecast so that you have the appropriate clothing for the conditions,” she said.
Superintendent Gale added it was also important to notify friends and family about your planned route and estimated time of your journey.
