Why can’t the police go back to targeting drink-driving, mobile phone use, etc. and also try catching the defective vehicles driving around with only one headlight on at night and the noisy hotted-up ones revving their engines in residential streets?

It’s more important to be careful when driving than to stare at your speedo. An added benefit of being careful is you can see police and speed cameras in advance, so you don’t get caught anyway.
