What makes you think serial speeders actually get caught? Everyone knows where the fixed cameras are, the white vans can be spotted miles away, and there are rarely police cars patrolling or performing speed checks.

I know it’s easy to bag Mr G because his opinions are in the minority here, but the reality is that speeding is extremely common on ACT roads, and voluntary revenue raising doesn’t seem to be doing much for actualy road safety.

Perhaps it’s time for a more pragmatic approach?

There are a few countries in Europe that base fines on income. See link below where for Finnish traffic tickets you can calculate the fine based on your income.

My opinions about law enforcement of speed limits have got nothing to do with being happily generous to the government, throwing money at them by deliberately driving past speed enforcement sites and copping as many fines as I possibly could.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

FACT 1:
I am AGAINST heavy-handed enforcement of posted speed limits, and the money-grubbing governments undertake via this method, ie. fines irrespective of one’s income level. Make no mistake — you have misinterpreted this as me saying “pay as much as you like by breaking as many speed laws as possible through as many speed enforcement checkpoints as possible, just so long as you are rich”.

FACT 2:
I am OPPOSED to speed limits that are set below what it should actually be for the stretch of road in question.

FACT 3:
I am not the only one angry about speed camera enforcement. I am one of a massive queue of people who try to get OUT of speeding fines, feeling that such infringements have been unfairly issued, according to the purpose (not the letter of the law).

I apologise for the misunderstanding, and hope this makes my opinions said here clearer for you.

Oh, all i got from MrG’s other posts on RA is that he loves paying speeding fines, and no matter how much we try and point out the simplicity of avoiding them, he will always happily continue to make his donations!

He has a point in his post, even if he means it in a different manner, there are those who can ‘Afford’ to break the law, so we should find a way to hit them harder to, while we continue to work out how to make the most of MrG’s generous attitude!

I’d be quite happy for speeding fines to be increased, provided we increase all punishments in proportion. An on the spot $2000 fine for carrying some dope would be a good start.

Correction… Swedish driver in Switzerland, so it is Switzerland with this law.

Sweden has a system like this. It helps makes sure that even the filthy rich feel the pain in the hip pocket.

Without a doubt Mr G you never fail to disappoint. If the speed limit is 60, sixty, six-zero, one more than 59, on less than 61, then it is 60. It’s not Anzac ave 60, or Sydney 60, or Mr G 60, its just 60…full stop 60 kilometres per hour. When will you get it through your thick f*cking head just because you think you should be able to go faster doesn’t mean the law should come down on you less.

FYI there are frequently groups of kids large and small walking along anzac ave.

Agreed also. We currently live on Chuculba Cr (though only for 5 more weeks!) and its like a racetrack at times. Backing out of our somewhat steep driveway can be a bit perilous.

Cheers for the clarification, i looked it up and you’re right. >45km/hr = $2,041 fixed penalty + 6 months suspension. Street racing/burnouts = 3 months impound, wow!
