Joy Burch is making sure we all know it’s NAIDOC week.
ACT Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Joy Burch today helped mark NAIDOC Week with the Annual Flag Raising Ceremony in Civic Square.
“The Flag Raising Ceremony symbolises the ACT Government’s ongoing commitment to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this country,” Ms Burch said.
NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia in July each year to celebrate the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The NAIDOC Week theme for 2011 is ‘Change: The Next Step is Ours’. The significance of the theme is to plan and take responsibility for the future.
NAIDOC recognises the survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and their contribution to modern Australia.
For those wondering NAIDOC stands for “National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee” which remains a bloody peculiar thing to have a week of to us.
