Hit and runner found

Calls from members of the public have assisted police in identifying a suspect to a hit and run on the Monaro Highway last week (Thursday, June 30) where a cyclist was struck by a car.

About 7.30pm a 58-year-old Jerrabomberra man was cycling home when he was struck by a vehicle travelling in the southbound lane of the Monaro Highway. The man was thrown from his bike and the offending vehicle fled the scene.

After receiving calls from the public, members from ACT Policing’s Collision, Investigation and Reconstruction Team (CIRT) were able to identify a 40-year-old Bredbo man as a suspect to the hit and run.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations Jeff Knight said that the information provided by the public was crucial in identifying the alleged offender.

“This again highlights the fact that there are times when police rely on assistance from the public to help solve crimes. If members of the public had decided to not call police on this occasion, we would still be looking for the offender and there’s every chance this hit and run would go unsolved,” he said.

The man is expected to be charged in relation to the matter and will face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

Be interesting to see what he is charged with? Just wondering if the cyclist had lights, high vis and if not I wonder if it affects the charges. – The leaving the scene part is the worst I think.

Sounds like that should be an easy one to clear up.

I wonder, if the driver is found to be the person hitting the cyclist, can the cyclist ask for monetary compensation on a civil-court?

There is a cycle way from Symo to the Jerra turnoff. So I gather the cyclist was not using it ? Not that it makes him fair game on the road. Come to think I’ve never seen a cycle on that path yet, but then I’m not up to early. Saw a bloke on a tractor trundling along one day.

One wonders whether cases like these will make the police ask for the publics help more often. It often seems like they dont really care about the publics help unless theyre all out of options. We often see stories here on RA of police asking for witnesses to some event that happened months ago, while only providing the skimmest of details. “Did you see this white car between 3am and 4am on the first saturday last month?” doesnt really get them much help, compared to ‘Did you see a silver SUV on the highway this afternoon, possibly with interstate plates, with damage to the left/right/front side”.. etc.

Too often when activities like this are happening, you only hear of ‘a police operation’, then a few days later the police might ask for assistance and be bewildered when no-one can remember details that far after the event.

Good work in this instance, and a good catch by the member of the public. One can only hope this might lead to them asking the public for assistance more promptly and concisely than they have been in the past.
