Two ACT Policing officers were exposed to blood and saliva by an aggressive, abusive 28-year-old male outside a Canberra nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Around 2.15 on Sunday morning (July 31), members of the City Beats Team approached a small group causing a disturbance in Alinga St, Civic, and where one man was seen to be bleeding profusely from his nose.
The man began acting aggressively toward the officers and other members of the public, and refused police directions.
When police attempted to take him into custody for a breach of the peace, the man deliberately spat blood and saliva at the eyes and mouths of two officers. He was eventually subdued, handcuffed and conveyed to the ACT Watch House.
The 28-year-old Dunlop man was charged with three counts of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, and one of obstructing a Commonwealth official. He was given Watch House bail yesterday, and directed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on August 8.
As a result of the incident, a male and a female police officer were required to be tested for potential exposure to viruses/pathogens, and will be monitored for ongoing potential health risks.
