As we move to denser living these things will have ever greater need.

I have to say, I just don’t agree with the premise of this.
These city farms supposedly make our lives more enjoyable healthy and fulfilling. But what about the people who are not among the privileged few who get to play in these farms?
Perhaps we would be better off building a block of apartments on that land. This would improve housing affordability in the city, which would mean people who don’t value these farms could spend more money on their families or whatever they value. The people in this apartment would have lower transport costs, in terms of time and money. Once again they can spend this on something they value more than a farm.
In fact, if we asked society to price how much they value each use of land, the apartment block would win hands down.
Not that I have a problem with parks or gardens in a city. It’s just the notion that these city farms are somehow a superior use of land.
