Canberra Avenue collision, rider down.

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a collision between a motorcycle and a car on Wednesday evening (August 24) on Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick.

About 5.30pm, the motorcyclist, a 43-year-old Flynn man, was travelling along Canberra Avenue (towards Kingston), near the Monaro Highway overpass, when a car changed into his lane and collided with him. The motorcyclist was knocked onto the median strip, losing control and flipping over the bike, injuring his shoulder.

The other vehicle has driven off without stopping.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who were driving along Canberra Avenue about 5.30pm on Wednesday and may have witnessed the collision between a black Suzuki Bandit motorcycle with ACT registration and the unknown car, possibly a sedan or station wagon.

Witnesses are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information may be provided anonymously.

I have taken a lesson from the Feline world when it comes to riding. A cat most of the time sees you before you see it. And they flash their head around constantly when being assaulted by stimulus so they have complete 360 degree awareness of their soroundings that is constantly being updated.

I have found that directly looking at all the drivers heads be it the back or front of them in ALL the vehicles around you gives you a bloody good idea what they are going to do and I believe gives the driver a subconcious idea that you are there (ever tried to secretly perve at a nice chick on the bus to have them turn around and stare you in the face). And to try and get away from all the cars around you and pretend they are going to come onto you or cut you off, or try to t bone you at an intersection.

I sometimes feel a bit anxious, paranoid and persecuted after thinking this way after a ride and probably look like a nutjob on speed but on the odd occasion when someone has come to cut me off from a side street I have been ready. knock on wood it keeps working.

I had dinner with him last night and he is OK, though still scratching his head as to how many rubber-neckers there were that didnt stop to help. Eventually two riders stopped to see if he was OK.

I think part of the issue at that spot is there a 20 second traffic light that everyone seems to race to get through. Perhaps something for ACT Roads to think about changing?

And yep, I hope they catch the idiot who failed to take responsibility for their actions too.

The loudest I hear in our suburb is a trail bike. Occasionally zooms past after midnight on nearby main road. Wakes up my toddler. Rattles windows and drowns out any TV or music with windows and shutters closed. Got to be many dB over the pollution limit.

Yeah, one of these people that spends their life trying to find something to winge about…”You had a loud party”, “Your dog barks to much”, “Don’t mow your lawn then”, “Your light is too bright shining in my window”, “Your bike is too loud”, bla bla bla. You and your toddler are not the most important things on the planet and if you believe they are then move out to a farm away from anyone else. I have never in my life found anything to complain about with any of my neighbours and I suspect that most of this persons neighbours find the most annoying noise to be the sound of their constant winging.

Let me guess, you’re the cock I saw at Qbn woollies on Monday. The Harley made my ears bleed FFS. No audible means of silencing and still they ride on our roads…

Suspect is hat-less, repeat, hat-less.

I feel the need to be clear that when I talk about getting loud pipes, I and I’m sure most others aren’t talking about the ear bleeding shotgun pipes that adorn harleys, but more reasonable pipes which give a more pronounced sound.

I am over motorbikes, one of the reasons is the cost but also the near misses & the boredom of road motorcycling (unless you are doing 200km/h………on a private road of course).

My pushbikes, particularly my MTB have taken me big time so I will be a tin topper as soon as I sell my CBR. Life is good punting down Skyline at Stromlo, no careless drivers to worry about 😛

I have no idea, I can’t account for your stupidity. Every little thing that you can do to draw attention to yourself while on a bike adds to your safety. I have definitely noticed being noticed due to being loud as has what_the. If you have not then what can I say.

I have survived nearly 30 years on motorcyles without loud exhausts & there are many other riders who also do not “need” them to survive. Yep, I have had near misses but every body who rides does, bikes get smeared regardless of their exhaust note. Every one of those near misses I have used my road craft to keep me out of trouble (except for the cyclist but some people tend to act like sheep & are unpredictable).

As I said this morning, travelling to work I saw the Kwaka before I heard it & it was loud. He came up so quick behind me moving in & out of the traffic flow that all it would have taken was for him to be in my blind spot & I was concentrating on something else for it all to be over, then I would have been the prick car driver. Split seconds.

Motorcycle safety has more to do with the rider than anything else.

Yes, quite correct KB, I should not have insulted. Please excuse my harsh word, I did feel bad about it as soon as I had posted.

Of course I agree that being loud is just one thing that can be done to increase safety, but this post proves that you cannot do too much to keep yourself safe on a bike sharing the road with heavier traffic. Car/truck/bus drivers just don’t seem to understand that one simple minor mistake can cost us our lives. I agree that rider you describe was foolish and I am always concious not to sit in blind spots. It does however give me a nice feeling to know that for that second or two I am accelerating past him my loud pipes helps him to know I am there. I have never said that all you need is loud pipes to be safe on the road but they do increase your chances. I feel extremely sorry for the poor 43-year-old Flynn man in this post and it terrifies me that it could be me one day. Unfortunately I love riding too much to give it up.

In the time I’ve owned it, the only problem I’ve had was a worn o-ring, which resulted in a fuel leak. A fifty cent part and 5 mins of effort had it back on the road again.

The reputation is probably deserved for the old bikes, but much like Alfas (or most Italians?) the newer bikes are much better. That all said, you don’t buy a Duc for something you can set and forget. They’re for enthusiasts who don’t mind a tinker or more frequent service intervals 🙂

Yah, the definately are not for the people who have no mechanical ability. Thats what Jap bikes are for.
