Security guard stabbed at Chisholm Coles

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an aggravated robbery where a security guard was stabbed at the Coles supermarket in Chisholm last night (Sunday, February 5).

Around 9.15pm the security guard received minor stab wounds to his shoulder after confronting two men who were allegedly attempting to steal alcohol from the store. He was taken to The Canberra Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

A/Superintendent Bob Wynn urges those faced with this kind of situation not to physically confront offenders.

“We take the view that property can be replaced, people can’t,’ A/Superintendent Wynn said. “It is important that you ensure your own safety first and do as the offender asks. Once the offender has left, secure the premises, cordon off the immediate area and call the police”.

The men fled with a quantity of alcohol.

The first offender is described as Caucasian in appearance, around 175cm (5’9”) tall, of medium build with short brown hair and wearing a black T-shirt.

The second offender is described as being Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander in appearance, approximately 170cm (5’7”) tall, a skinny to medium build with black hair and a black moustache.

It appears that you have been misled by the properties of Kevlar jackets against penetrator attack. This generalisation has already caused people to lose their lives.
Entering “stab proof vest death” in google may prove educational.

Ask any protective gear vendor if their equipment is bulletproof or knife proof. Their replies will be interesting.

Why does everything that happen around Chisholm have to have something to do with the Tavern OR the Sports Club. Firstly, this happened at COLES, where they have bottles of alcohol on the shelves for everyone to help themselves whilst food shopping. Alcohol and cigarettes are one of the easiest to turn into cash for a thief as the general household items like TV’s etc aren’t worth stealing nowdays. The supermarkets should have lock-up cabinets that they serve from, somewhat like the IGA Stores now. It’s not as if you have to have a feel of the bottle, or a smell of the contents before you buy it.

I don’t quite know what this all has to do with happy hour at the Chisholm Tavern. The Chisholm Sports Club run Happy Hours and promotions however there is no mention of this. The Tavern is closed way before the Club as far as talking about late night trading. Please stop the hate mail against small businesses that are trying to make a go of it.

Strictly speaking a security guard has very little rights beyond an average person. Of course they do usually have some degree of training.

Well the problem is many “security” staff are hired on the cheap. Rent-a-cops who don’t have a security licence, or at least anything beyond a basic one and therefore have limited use of force options. Many job ads from Canberra department stores I’ve seen don’t even require a security licence, saying training provided on the job and a first aid certificate is beneficial.

There are security companies in Australia who offer comparable use of force options and PPE to specialist Police units. Indeed the typical Chubb guard doing cash in transit around Canberra now has better kit that the typical general duties Police officer.

Had this Coles guard being wearing the Kevlar vest the Chubb guards are kitted out with these days, he wouldn’t have been stabbed successfully. And had he being equipped with OC or a Taser, it’s likely the offender would not have even tried. But when all you’ve got is a name badge and a white shirt, it’s absolutely foolish to try and stop an offender because they know by virtue of carrying a knife, they have the upper hand.

When I was overseas there was a story about some poor bank guard who had guarded the same bank for 35 years without anything happening. Then the first time there was a robbery he got shot (survived).

Not sure why I was reminded of that.

I think being a bank security guard would be amongst the most boring jobs in the world. Can’t imagine being a Coles security guard rates much higher; but on the other hand its going to be safer than being a ‘security guard’ (bouncer) at most of the clubs around town.
