I have a new house.
The walls are very bare.
Where can I buy some local and original paintings/drawings/sketches?
I’m looking for a place or event that runs regularly, with lots of different stuff to choose from.
Preferably under $500.

If you like photography check out Grace Costa’s new exhibition at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre March 1-20.

Rather than put a maximum price in your head, I recommend buying gradually, buying fewer works, and allowing a much bigger budget – it’s worth keeping most of your walls empty if you’re putting really good artworks on them gradually. It may well be better to have one incredible work on one wall than one on each. You’ll find you can afford prints by well-known artists for a lot less than paintings of course … and consider 3D works as well. Some local sculptors make small works as well as big ones.
If you go to Canberra Museum and Gallery, they exhibit lots of locals, and have old catalogues (such as Ruth Waller) that you can consult. And chat to the staff – they know the scene!
Also google prints and printmaking, there’s a great site with examples of works by a range of Australian artists. I think it’s run by the NGA
Google Lassetters Gallery and you’ll find a reliable dealer formerly in Manuka now based in Kingston who has a range of more minor works by big names, and may let you pay off works (pick up on final payment of course). Good luck!
Check out http://www.carleyart.com.au. The artist works out of a studio on the Sunshine Coast but it is a Canberra based business. Very original artwork.
Thanks everyone. Some really awesome places mentioned. I’ll check them out.
While it not till the end of the year the ANU School of Art graduate exhibition should have lots of what you are after. Canberra Contemporary Art Space regularly shows artists from the local area and some of the shows would provide works that you might like. Similarly for Megalo and ANCA galleries.
The Artists’ Shed in Queanbeyan. Services the Canberra and Queanbeyan region.
AND they’re now supporting independent musicians, theatre and comedians as well through their expanded acitivities, so you’re really sharing the love around.

Ask Jon Stanhope…. actually, I don’t think any of the $millons he authorised to spend went to a need local artist, though I’d be delighted to be proven wrong.
This won’t feed starving canberran artists, but C&G Auctions regularly hold household auctions that include art. Most of the stuff is from deceased estates. Auctions are always on Sunday, and mostly held at The Causeway. They have a website.
There is a gallery at Gold creek, Arwin Gallery I think, Also try the Old Bus Depot Markets on every Sunday in Kingston, I also think there is a small gallery in the old Train station at Bunendore. hope this helps
