A 36-year-old Charnwood man has had his drivers licence suspended after he was caught speeding and drink driving by a member of ACT Policing Traffic Operations last night (Friday, February 17).
Around 8.30pm police noticed a blue Ford Focus XR5 Turbo take off from the traffic lights at Southern Cross Drive and Coulter Drive, accelerating to a speed of 132km/h in an 80km/h zone.
Police activated their lights and sirens, pulling the vehicle over. The driver tested positive to a roadside breath screening test and was taken back to Belconnen Police Station where he recorded an Alcohol Contact (AC) of 0.116.
Acting Superintendent Steve Hogarth says the driver was extremely lucky not to have injured himself or other road users.
“It is very concerning that a person would create such a serious risk to other road users. Not only were serious criminal offences potentially committed, but it should not be overlooked that the driver took these risks in dangerous wet conditions,” Acting Superintendent Hogarth said.
The driver was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice and will be summonsed to the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
