It’s been a damn funny week with a public holiday in the middle to confuse us all.
But the weekend is hard upon us!
What’s worth seeing and doing around town?
Just leave your suggestions in the comments.

What: Dutch Embassy fete & fundraiser
Where: 120 Empire Circuit, Yarralumla
When: 28 April from 9am – 1pm (Dutch games between 10 & 12)
It is tradition in the Netherlands that kids & adults sell their unwanted / no longer needed goods on 30 April (the Queen’s birthday public holiday) in the streets of the city they live in.
This year on the 28th of April between 9.00 hours and 13.00 hours, we will use the Netherlands Embassy terrain to hold a Queens birthday fete and fundraiser. People with a Dutch interest and / or Dutch background are selling secondhand or new, handmade goods at this market. This is the third edition of this event.
Besides the stalls with secondhand and handmade goods on the fete, there will be old-fashioned Dutch games like: koekhappen, zaklopen, sjoelen en boerengolf and they will take place between 10.00 and 12.00. Volunteers of the ACT Dutch school & playgroup as well as from the Embassy will be there to help in explaining how to play the games. Dutch pancakes, kroketten, cheese , licorice and more Dutch food will be sold on the day too.
The beneficiary of this years fundraising effort is Ms Niki van Buuren.
Here’s why:
As you may or may not know, Nikki was attending her horse in 2003 when she and her mother Wendy got trapped in the firestorm that swept through Canberra on 18 January 2003 and which eventually cost 4 lives and burned 500+ homes.
Niki received approximately 66% surface area burns, predominantly third degree and she spent 10 months recovering from her injuries in a Sydney hospital.
During her recovery she became inspired to continue riding as a para equestrian and set herself the goal of competing at an international level in dressage.
She is now at a point where she is ready to participate in the 2012 World Para Equestrian Driving Championships, which will be held in Breda (the Netherlands) from 30 August till 2 September 2012. Since she and the team she will be travelling with do not receive any government financial support, the team relies on sponsorship, fundraising and grants funding to reach their target of a minimum of $50.000 by mid July. We’ve decided to join in the effort to get Niki to Breda in August.
Niki herself will be at the Dutch Queens birthday market on 28 April to talk to people about her quest to get to Breda.
I’m taking my daughter to milk a cow at Duntroon Dairy on Sunday morning (part of the Heritage festival), and then it’s off to Cockington Green with some friends.

Thursday 26th April: Roesy + James Fahy, 8.00pm $10
Acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Roesy has moved to Melbourne, bringing with him a canon of instant classics influenced by the age-old Irish guilds of story telling and folk song. Roesy’s record speaks for itself with six albums and ten years of extensive touring throughout the US and Europe under his belt. Refreshingly devoid of pretension or cliché, Roesy’s music is best appreciated in a live setting. Although not long established in Australia, Roesy has already started to make a deep impression upon local listeners.
“Roesy was a standout for me at Woodford. We only gave him three gigs but as it turned out, our audiences would have been much happier had there been six. Solo performers rarely cut it at Woodford, Roesy did…there’s just that bit of magic in his music. It’s to do with that blarney blood; Irish artists reinventing,Roesy is one of those” (Bill Hauritz, Festival Director – Woodford Folk Festival)
