Weatherzone made a mistake – there were 53 nights below 0 in the winter of 2002 and we’ve had 48 this year (with a chance of a 49th tomorrow). More impressive is the total for the whole year so far; we’re currently on 68, and should be up to 71 or more next week – last year (when winter was unexceptional, but both spring and autumn ranked 2nd) had 78 but apart from that there hadn’t been a year over 70 since 1994 (75). The record’s 95 in 1957, with six other years in the 80s.
The observing site at the airport moved in 2008 because the old site was getting built out, and although the new site looks to have similar average minimum temperatures to what the old site had before the building, it does seem to be a bit more prone to extreme low minimum temperatures when you compare against other places in the region.
I wonder when BOM will get around to shifting their site at Monash, as the retirement village extensions now near circle it .
