NBN rolls superfast broadband fibre into Gungahlin

It’s interesting to see that the rollout map has been updated now as well, so you can get an idea of which areas are going to be rolled out following Gungahlin. Previously, the rest of the ACT was in the ‘inside 3 years’ envelope, but now a heap of North Canberra, a bit under half of Belconnen closest to the city, and the whole Queanbeyan / Jerrabomberra area are due to start within a year.

Not sure who you’re quoting there or why, but some residents in Watson (at The Fair, I believe) have also had NBN for a little while now.

So when Jazz says Gungahlin is getting it first, it seems safe to assume he’s talking about versus the rest of the ACT, but that’s not true.

If you are already served by high speed fibre, I don’t believe NBNco has plans to overbuild as they are the “provider of last resort”, however a Transact owned FTTP network may join into the NBN, but I’m not sure how it will end up working.

Areas where fibre is currently available via TransACT fall into the ‘Adequately Served’ basket (probably).

http://www.dbcde.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/147761/Adequately-served-criteria-and-assessment-to-facilitate-rollout-of-NBN.pdf has more information, but basically part of the criteria is that the fibre operator agrees to provide layer 2 access to the network, so that services can be provided by your choice of ISP, at a wholesale price set by the NBN.

My understanding is that if someone like TransACT refused to provide this access, NBNCo would then be able to get approval to overbuild the TransACT network – meaning TransACT would be competing directly with the NBN. I can’t see that happening – they’d get slaughtered, and would end up having to bring their prices in line with the NBN anyway.

I don’t know what work might be happening behind the scenes to get that moving forward, but until services start to get switched on and users can get on board outside of TransACT areas, I wouldn’t imagine much would happen – TransACT will hold onto their monopoly for as long as possible, and likely use the time between now and then to lock as many new and existing users into long contracts as they can.

Does anyone know what is going to happen to people on transact FTTP, and when it is going to happen? I love my fibre connection, but I hate paying through the nose for Transact’s shitty customer service.

Hopefully now that they have started physically rolling out, the rest of the build will continue to spread through-out Canberra relatively quickly.
Access to cheap, fast internet has the potential to revolutionize the way small to medium businesses access IT services, with the potential for local suppliers to remotely host their data and services instead of having an on-site server (yes you can do it now, but it is potentially very slow when shared out amongst 50 employees) – amongst a myriad of other potential uses.

As someone who is in a suburb that is planned for deployment well after the next federal election, I really hope that if the Liberals are elected, that Turnbull will have the good sense to prevent a dismantling of NBNco, and just work on getting it done better and quicker.
