patagonian toothfish should be on the ‘avoid’ list both because of sustainability and because, at the top of its food chain, is likely to have a higher concentration of heavy metals so is not necessarily the healthiest option (although it sadly is a tasty option)
cod. good oily rich in omega 3’s. and deeeeeeee-licious, esp black baked in tomato cream sauce.
“Personally I think the federal government should start handing out incentive grants to start fish farms.”
Thumper,
They do, and its good fun!
Patogonian taste like shit, according to a Navy mate of mine.
Orange Roughy is interesting because we know absolutely nothing about it breeding habits, life cycle, maturity etc, and yet we still drag them out of the sea in millions. Thus we should not be commercially harvesting them until we do understand these things.
Personally I think the federal government should start handing out incentive grants to start fish farms.
Thumper, I seem to recall reading somewhere that researchers in “Nud Zilund” have found that Orange Roughy take up to 50 years to “suxually” mature?
Overpriced? Pretentious?
Why didn’t somebody say so!
I shall have to sample it now … extinct or not.
It’s like the giant cod from the Goodies!
“Mr Cod get ready to die….”
Man, I wish they’d put reruns of that back on free-to-air.
They could run that episode followed by the late B&W film spot: ‘Goodbye Mr Chips’.
Drive safely. Tip your waitresses. Thank you and good day.
Diplomat Cake! I saw these at the Kingston Vietnamese bakery. fearsome things, they are loaf-shaped, and wrapped tightly in gladwrap to hold their shape, and seem to be a gooey conglomeration of custardy stuff and fruit and nuts.
If this toothfish eats other fish, then it’s not halal.
For everyone who does not know what a Patagoina toothfish looks like:

JB if you could weave the picture into the post that would be great.
Yes they are a fish, a very toothy fish that feeds on other fish, cephlapods and DMD if given the chance.

A bit of both, there is a legal toothfish fishery, but there’s also a LOT of poaching.
This load might well have been confiscated from poachers and then bought at auction.
either way, judging from other forum reports and cooking sites on the taste, it is NOT a nice fish in a dish.
maybe it should be an offal product?

Didn’t we sent the Navy half way round the world after some South American boat that was poaching Toothfish?
Yeah, I thought they were endangered and we went hunting the evil fishermen who were poaching them.
We chased the poor buggers half way around the world because they were fishing in Australian territorial waters, not because they were after protected fishies.
Its not endangered there spread all over the vast southern ocean. We only send the Navy down there to stop them fishing in our considerable sized territory down there just as we do in the northern waters. The only thing they don’t want is for them to become exploited like the rest of the worlds fisheries.
My mother used to resist Orange Roughy (deep sea perch?) on menus, sayign it was lovely but it was endangered, so she wouldn’t encourage them by ordering it.
Yes it is on the “avoid” list if you believe in focusing on sustainable fisheries.
Like the orange roughy, which I was surprised to see being sold at the Farmers Markets. Given the demographics of the clientele surprising the fishmongers are game to even bring that species to the markets!
The fish shop in the Canberra Centre also sell roughy.
I don’t want to be ‘fishist’ but they’re pretty ugly looking in the piscine scheme of things.
Not as bad as the denizens of the midnight zone perhaps, but I guess one of the 200kg jobbers would be a bit scary to run into in a dark underwater alley.

Me, I believe it’s some sort of fish.
probably quite a toothy fish I would say.
I guessed as much, but didn’t want to jump to such a rash conclusion without a PhD to back up my supposition.

Damn. I have a mate who’s effecively a Dr of Patagonian Toothfish (not too much of a stretch) but he’s off doing fishy things in other waters and only contactable by smoke signals when there’s a southerly blowing.
Me, I believe it’s some sort of fish.

aren’t toothfish a protected species, or at least fished by 2 companies who export primarily to the rest of the world?

A Google search reveals it to be “one of the tastiest fish”, and a fish that’s too expensive to serve at a restuarant named in it honour.

Apparently, very succulent, relatively rare and mostly exported to the US and Japan.

Haven’t tried it personally but given that no one is ever in Peppered Prawn when I drive past at lunchtime and this is a very rare and expensive meal, I do wonder?
Patagonian Toothfish is a deep water, Sub-Antartic species also marketed in some coutries as the Chilean Sea-Bass. This popular South American fish has a rich, melt-in-your-mouth flavor and tender, moist texture. But the same with most fish, if they cook the shit out of it, it will taste like shit. So long as it’s fresh and not over-cooked you will enjoy the experience.
