Ikea in Canberra: hit or s***?
This IKEA inspired exhibition is in Sydney, but it may be of interest to some people:

I love the statistic that 1 in 10 Europeans is conceived on an IKEA bed. Could that be the truth? Or a flat-pack lie?

Ikea just needs to organise a delivery system and warehouse to Canberra. No need for an entire store
What a great idea! A creative but sensible solution to a retail opportunity.
Ikea do deliver from their SA and WA stores. It obviously costs and not everything is available for delivery, but it’s something at least. And I think it is cheaper than the separate Ikea delivery service to Canberra which some bright spark started.

We used a company call Bring It Home to deliver a bookshelf, they only deliver Ikea furniture to homes in Canberra. Ikea quoted us $400 for delivery, we paid Bring It Home $80…nuff said.
Prices have gone up a bit. Expect to pay $110 as a minimum now, with a scale price depending on the item. Still, it looks like a reasonable deal if you don’t want to spend a day going up to Sydney.
Ikea is about more than “cheap furniture”, it’s a whole experience, and it’s a pain having to drive to sydney to experience the experience. I see a LOT of Ikea furniture in ACT region homes, in real estate ads etc. Clearly they have a lot of customers in this area, the coast, the snowy, Wagga etc.
I’m still gobsmacked that a behmoth like Costco opened up in Canberra, but Ikea won’t.
Ikea could even do a show-store, and do some almost-in-time from Sydney for the big items. Masters are doing that with their carpets, I notice. (which are much cheaper than Ikea’s!).
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE an IKEA store here! And thanks for the suggestion of Bring It Home. We looked into IKEA delivery but the prices were really outrageous. But there’s no comparison of going to the store, enjoying some swedish meatballs at the restaurant, and then seeing all the products….

you’d win my vote for sure if your policy platform included bringing an IKEA to Canberra!
Implying a political party has any say if a retail store can set up in canberra?
I think the issue has always been that we simply don’t have the population to sustain a large ikea store
yeah but people want to actually test the furniture themselves instead of looking at pretty pictures online.
When you have a couple of guys who deliver Ikea furniture to Canberra as a business, you have a market for the store to potentially open up.

As much as I would love an Ikea store to come to Canberra, I was under the impression that Ikea don’t place stores in cities with less than 500,000 population..

Herrald = Fairfax Media = Canberra Times.
I actually think the reports of a potential Canberra Ikea Store is simply some editorial establishment to make it more relevant to Fairfax’s Canberra Audience.
Ikea has a very clear policy that cities require a population of 1 million or more to be considered for store deployment.
Also, the article does not reference any specific info from Ikea, nor is the information quoted from anything Ikea have stated

Definitely a market for it. I know a number of people who have made the trek up to Sydney just to shave a few hundred dollars off the price of furniture

I’ve had one very strong Labor supporter on twitter joke this morning that they would vote Pirate instead if we had bringing IKEA to Canberra as a policy, so I think there are a lot of people who think it’d be a hit 🙂
…
Laugh? I couldn’t start.
But it will create employment for some plucky men or women to put together the furniture for incompetents like me. Sort of defeats the purpose (which is cheapness).

With a steady stream of young people moving to Canberra for Uni and looking for cheap furniture, they’d have a market for sure, despite our relatively small size.
