Chained around the neck, an Aboriginal tracker (David Gulpilil) is forced to help three mounted police officers track a fugitive into rugged country.
The characters in Rolf de Heer’s film take on archetypal qualities, and Gulpilil’s quietly dignified performance carries the tragedy of history. Featuring a haunting soundtrack by Archie Roach and Peter Coad’s paintings in place of scenes of explicit violence.
“Like a tapestry unfolding the film charts the attitudes, the shifts and balances of power within the group as if it were the history of white settlement here.” – Margaret Pomeranz, SBS
