Rose Hong (Joan Chen) is a knockout as a Hong Kong nightclub singer. She marries a white Australian sailor and migrates to suburban Melbourne with her two children in 1964. An autobiographical film told from the perspective of Rose’s son, writer-director Tony Ayres, this is a heart-wrenching contemplation of love, betrayal, identity and dislocation.

‘It’s a film of sheer beauty, in Ayres’ direction and especially in Joan Chen’s tragically glamorous performance.’ – SBS
