Police allege a man tried to steal a vacuum cleaner from a JB Hi-Fi store before threatening staff with a butane blowtorch.

Staff at the electronics store in Westfield Woden saw a man pick up a display vacuum and begin carrying it around the store at about 3 pm on Tuesday (17 June), an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

“When approached by staff the man allegedly held up a butane blowtorch towards staff and threatened them,” the spokesperson said.

“The man then allegedly left the store with the vacuum after again threatening security staff.”

The 30-year-old from Macgregor was charged with aggravated robbery and was taken for a mental health assessment before he faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday (19 June) and was granted bail.

The matter will return to court at a future date.
