For this year’s Art. Make. Create, audiences young and old are (literally) drawn into the vibrant, imaginative world of Thom Roberts, an artist with a style that invites viewers to see the everyday world in surprising new ways. Photo: National Portrait Gallery.

What happens when portraiture meets playtime? Find out these school holidays as artworks move, morph and come to life at the National Portrait Gallery.

For four busy hours, Art. Make. Create will transform the gallery into a hands-on wonderland inspired by exhibiting artist Thom Roberts, whose works playfully reimagine traditional portraiture by blending people with trains, buildings and other whimsical forms.

Excitingly, Thom himself will be on-site for the event, facilitating interactive art experiences that invite audiences to celebrate his practice and connect with his exhibition.

National Portrait Gallery Manager Learning Programs Alana Sivell says audiences of all ages respond really well to his work.

“Thom has a very fresh perspective on how we can see and represent people,” she said.

“He’ll be creating a large-scale train-themed artwork on the day, incorporating portraits of attendees, so people will see themselves in this artwork. It’s going to be really cool.”

Audiences can expect a vibrant mix of activities for all ages spanning across the Gallery, with everything from LEGO block printing and kaleidoscope-making to wearable train costumes.

Children can craft face badges, design pop-out train models to take home or decorate a box to add to a collaborative cardboard city that will grow throughout the day.

“All these activities respond to themes in Thom’s practice and the exhibition, which will run until Sunday 20 July,” Alana says.

Importantly, there will be a sensory-friendly chill-out space equipped with sensory kits, ensuring the day is inclusive, safe and welcoming for all families.

“What makes this event so special is that it’s more than just a fun day out – it’s a chance for young audiences to connect with art in a meaningful and playful way,” Alana says.

“It sets the stage for the Canberra community to come together, engage with creativity in an inclusive and welcoming environment and celebrate the power of imagination as a shared experience.”

Expect live music with local favourite DJ Sue on the decks and singer-songwriter Charlie Grace from Daydream Machine performing a joyful mix of indie pop covers and original tunes.

Can’t make it on the day? Don’t worry, a special interactive family space inspired by Thom Roberts’ exhibition will remain open throughout the July school holidays.

Families can continue to explore a range of free, hands-on activities designed to spark imagination and artistic discovery.

Art. Make. Create takes place at the National Portrait Gallery from 10 am to 2 pm on Sunday 6 July. Thom Roberts’ exhibition continues until Sunday 20 July.
