Construction of the long-awaited Canberra Brickworks residential and commercial development in Yarralumla will get under way in the coming weeks after recent approvals.
To be developed by Doma, the Brickworks will offer 380 homes, as well as a world-class commercial and retail centre to emerge from the repurposing of the heritage-listed brick kilns and associated buildings.
The development approval for this stage of the project has paved the way for construction to start, eight years after the ACT Government selected Doma as the preferred tenderer for the development.
The Canberra Brickworks operated from 1913 to 1976, creating the famous Canberra red brick. It has been the subject of numerous development and adaptive reuse proposals since being decommissioned in 1976.
The revitalised precinct in the heritage core of the site will feature a mix of office spaces, allied health services and wellness facilities, including a gym, day spa and skin clinic.
Food and beverage venues will bring the precinct to life, with a bakery, wine bar, cafés and restaurants, all of which will be housed within the heritage brick kilns and have access to a working garden.
The precinct will be set around a landscaped piazza with mature trees and a water feature.

Doma managing director Jure Domazet said this was an incredibly exciting project for Doma and Canberra.
“Our vision for the Brickworks site is to create a vibrant precinct that honours the site’s rich heritage while offering contemporary spaces for the community to connect, work and relax,” he said.
“We look forward to carefully curating a mix of experiences and venues that will make this a truly special destination for locals and visitors alike.”
Doma’s goal is to officially open the Brickworks Heritage Core precinct in mid-2027.
With a history of delivering world-class hospitality, wellness and dining experiences, Doma says it is committed to creating a landmark destination that seamlessly blends heritage, sustainability and modern amenity.
The broader Canberra Brickworks development will include 380 new residential dwellings, offering a mix of stand-alone houses, terraces, and apartments.
The first stage of the residential development, comprising of free-standing homes and terraced townhomes, is expected to be released to the market in the first quarter of 2026.
The project will also create more than 30,000 square metres of landscaped parklands for residents and visitors.
On-site works, including civil and infrastructure upgrades across the 16 ha site, are expected to start in the coming weeks.
Doma is now inviting Expressions of Interest from well-established operators keen to lease space within The Brickworks precinct as well as from potential homebuyers.
