There’s the fact you have to pack the groceries yourself as they’re scanned at the speed of light by the checkout operator.

But perhaps the biggest bugbear for regular customers of ALDI stores is that there’s no option for home delivery like there is for rivals Coles and Woolworths.

No longer.

The German-based supermarket chain has announced a home-delivery service trial – starting right here in the ACT.

From today (8 July), Canberra customers can order their ALDI groceries online through the delivery service DoorDash, and they’ll be … well, delivered to your door.

“Aussies in the nation’s capital can shop ALDI’s exclusive range of high-quality products at everyday low prices at the click of a button for the first time ever,” a statement from the chain said.

“Through DoorDash, Canberrans can now conveniently order from more than 1800 products including award-winning fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood, dairy, bread and household essentials, transforming the way they shop with ALDI.”

ALDI Australia chief commercial officer Jordan Lack expects “Australians will rejoice at the news of ALDI taking our first step in offering customers this convenient shopping format”.

“We’re thrilled that customers in Canberra will be able to shop with ALDI from the comfort of their homes,” he said.

“We will be watching our Canberra trial very closely with plans to scale in the near future.”

Locals need only download the DoorDash app on their phone, or head to the DoorDash website and search ALDI, to add items to their cart and order.

From here, you choose a delivery window that suits and the “Dashers” take care of the rest.

“We are thrilled to partner with ALDI to deliver greater convenience, choice and affordability to the people of Canberra,” DoorDash APAC vice president Simon Rossi said.

“This partnership with ALDI represents an exciting step forward in how DoorDash is redefining how Aussies can shop for groceries with a range of delivery options from on-demand, same day or scheduled, making everyday essentials easier to access than ever before.”

ALDI confirms the trial is only for groceries – you’ll still have to visit the stores in person to browse the special buys in the centre aisle.

There are 13 ALDI stores in the ACT – in Amaroo, Civic, Casey, Chisholm, Condor, Holt, Macquarie, Majura Park, Weston and Wright, as well as the Belconnen, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong town centres.

As for how likely the delivery service is to roll out elsewhere, ALDI’s literally putting money on it.

“To celebrate this partnership, customers who download DoorDash and use code EARLYBIRD on their first DoorDash order before 15 July anywhere in Australia will receive 30 per cent off that order and get up to $100 off at ALDI on DoorDash when it launches near you,” ALDI says*.

Now, if you’ll excuse me – I have some Choceur to order.

Some information of the approximate cost of the delivery service would have been valuable.
