A home with architectural style, space, views and entertaining potential is a hard thing to find but 40 Hawker Street in Torrens has it all.

This six-bedroom, three-bathroom property is perched on a massive 2700 sqm block that backs onto the Mt Taylor nature reserve and overlooks the suburb.

“The home sits on the second-largest block in Torrens and none of the space has been wasted,” LJ Hooker agent Emma Irwin says.

“Everything has been done to bring those views to the centre and you can see green space from every room in the house, the home is so open and bright.”

That sense of openness and light comes from its unique design by architecture firm Petitt & Sevitt, a sought-after designer known for seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces.

“The home’s design is amazing and even little things like the exposed dark timber and the warm, earthy colour palette create such a beautiful congruence between the home itself and the bushland surrounding it,” Emma says.

The best homes combine aesthetics and practicality. This property does exactly that. The main bedroom features a walk-in robe and an ensuite. With a second main bedroom and ensuite, plus four other bedrooms, there’s room for everyone.

For communal living, the home has a living area, family room and dining room, while the original living room before the home’s extension has been turned into a second office and a rumpus room.

“The floor plan is really flexible and there’s so much room that really any set-up is possible,” LJ Hooker agent Jane Macken says.

That’s to say nothing of the separate laundry, three garden sheds and the two paved courtyard entertaining areas.

“The current owners love the low-maintenance aspect of this home,” Jane says. “It’s a rare thing to find a home this big that practically manages itself.”

The property sets a benchmark for convenience with two carports, ducted gas heating, five air-conditioning units and a solar hot water system. The kitchen has evaporative cooking, a five-burner cooktop, Miele oven and dishwasher.

Emma says with a house like this, it would be impossible to say no to Christmas hosting.

“It’s the ideal home for having around family or friends, even big crowds. There’s the north-facing verandah overlooking green space, a lower deck, a fireplace, two spas, a barrel sauna and of course the in-ground pool out the back,” Jane says.

“That pool is very private too, it’s at the rear of the home and totally secluded.”

For a family looking for somewhere quiet, this property is just about perfect as it directly backs onto the nature reserve, bush walks and trails.

“Location-wise, the property is very special, the owners have really enjoyed the walking tracks but even when just sitting on the verandah, they can see native birds and kangaroos hopping around,” Emma says.

“There are green spaces everywhere and the home was designed with that in mind.”

Yet the property is just 10 minutes from the Woden shops, meaning the area’s shopping, restaurants and clubs are in close reach.

A perfectly designed family home with access to nature, views and endless room, this property manages a country-home level of space but has a central position in the Woden Valley.

This is indeed a lovely house but too big for just me. Even if I did have a family, sadly there’s no way I could very afford to buy such a place. Even a single story one house would be unaffordable.
