Following an AirTag on a stolen e-bike has helped police recover an estimated $50,000 worth of bikes and scooters from a serviced apartment in central Canberra.

The owner of an e-bike stolen on Wednesday (9 July) used an AirTag to track his bike to a serviced apartment business in the city, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

Police arrived and spoke with the occupant of an apartment before obtaining a search warrant.

Police found 15 bikes and e-bikes as well as five e-scooters during the search. They also found tools and other bike parts.

All the items are believed to have been stolen.

“The estimated value of the goods recovered is approximately $50,000,” the police spokesperson said.

A 25-year-old man will be charged over the matter when he appears in court later this month.

The police spokesperson reminded Canberrans to register their bikes and e-bikes on BikeLinc by clicking here.

The free service allows owners to record their bike and contact details.

“Should a bike be lost or stolen, that incident can also be recorded on the BikeLinc system,” the police spokesperson said.

“Police use BikeLinc to identify owners when bikes are recovered and second-hand bike buyers can also check to make sure the bike they are buying hasn’t been reported stolen.”
