Human rights such as food, shelter, safety, education, etc.

It would be kinda hard to lock people up against their will (prison) and not provide them with food and shelter. Education might be optional, but as for safety, if you lock someone up and make no effort to keep them safe, you’ll probably end up being sued for damages.

Of course everyone in the community should have access to affordable and decent food, housing and educaton, and be safe (which often goes with decent housing). These are basic human rights.

But to go back to the original point, if imprisonment makes the public less safe by making offenders “worse”, then the goal of keeping the community safe is missed. Locking people up forever sounds like a great idea (as someone else implies), but only if you want to pay taxes high enough to build and operate many more AMCs.

and this policy is already in place in the ACT http://www.justice.act.gov.au/criminal_and_civil_justice/restorative_justice for young offenders.

It used to be in place for adults as part of the RISE project, but it disappeared.

I don’t think violence is encouraged, though.

You know what Zed should have done after the election? He should have come out publicly and said:

Locking people up is expensive and doesn’t work to prevent reoffending. That’s well-established everywhere. Locking them up only prevents them offending while they are in custody, and actually not even that – they just offend in custody instead. It’s a very expensive way of preventing crime. The costs are mainly staff costs – to reduce the cost you have to reduce staffing levels, and then you’ll have more escapes and more offending within custody.

On the one hand, KDM was involved in arguably a more serious, and armed, crime, and possibly against two potential assailants. On the other hand, 18 yo male did succeed in apprehending the suspect.

All he did was witness a B&E, then (tackle and) detain one of the burglers until the cops arrived, as per the Citizen’s arrest info posted here. What was ‘thuggish’? It didn’t say he used undue force, or beat him in any way. And if there was some sort of ‘thuggish’ behaviour, then the law (I know, fat chance in this town) will sort it out….
If tackling a burgler (however stupid and risky that may be) is your version of violence, then with all due respect, WTF? If that was the case, then wouldn’t any cop who chased and ‘tackled’ an offender who was trying to escape also need to be charged?

Interestingly enough these are actually the only powers under which a security guard can detain someone too.

Anyway with a bit of luck the little s*** will rat on his mates. At the very least the police are a phone call to a high school away from finding out who the others are anyway given the identity of the one they caught, and the witness probably has a decent chance of identifying them visually.

The shop in question is the new coffee shop, Niugini Arabica. It’s only just opened and Duffy residents seem to be enjoying it – I encourage readers to give it a go.
